This past Sunday I had the privilege of accompanying the senior class on a day trip to Washington DC as part of their Modern World 2 History Block. We spent much of our time in the Holocaust Museum, where students were able to explore at their own pace after being prepared at school leading up to the visit.
Afterwards, we spent time studying at the World War II Memorial, which stands in a grand circle directly between the Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial. We then scuffled across the ice on the reflecting pool to study the Korean War Memorial and concluded with the Vietnam War Memorial.
Throughout our day, Mrs. Zay encouraged the students to really look and take in the stories being told and asked exploratory and leading questions that engaged the students’ interest, and mine! I am grateful to have shared a little slice of the experience, knowledge, and feeling that our students and my children get to have as a part of their education.
