Kim John Payne: "The Socially Resilient Child: How to Help Your Child Who is Being Teased or Excluded"

  • Oct 1, 2010
  • 7PM – 9PM

High School Gym
Cost $10
Hosted by the Association of Parents

In this presentation we will explore how parents can prevent their child teasing or being teased, break the cycle of teasing or being teased if it has already started, and move from being isolated to building friendship.

These strategies will be presented in a step by step format that is simple and very effective in most situations of teasing and bullying.  The child feels: "I am safe and being listened to." "This is not going to get me into trouble." "This is not some weird adult idea." "I am going to be able to do this at school on my own without anyone knowing my parents are helping me."

Kim John Payne has worked as a counselor, adult educator, consultant/researcher and educator for 24 years. He has been helping children, adolescents and families explore issues such as social difficulties with siblings and classmates, attention and behavioral issues at home and school, emotional issues such as defiance, aggression, addiction and self-esteem.

Kim John has researched and implemented a Social Inclusion Approach in many communities, which helps overcome anti social behavior, bullying and teasing in school and at home. He is at present engaged in an extensive research project, focusing on exploring and developing a drug free approach to Attention Related Disorders. He was the Founding Director of 'The Challenge of Adolescence,' a training course for therapists, teachers and parents.

He is presently based in Harlemville, New York, USA. He is the author of the book The Games Children Play, published by Hawthorn Press and is presently working on his two new books, Simplicity Parenting and The Soul of Discipline..Kim John strives to deepen understanding and give practical tools for life that arise out of the burning social issues of our time.

This workshop will provide parents, educators and caregivers with five steps that can be taken to help children feel calmer, happier and more secure. So much of modern life seems to be about more. Very few presentations you will attend will suggest that you do less, but this is one of them. It quietly presents ‘do-able’ daily ways in which we can simplify our family’s life and by doing so build resiliency within our children.

Step One focuses on simplifying your environment. The second step is about simplifying food and mealtimes. The third is about simplifying your family’s schedule. The forth is simplifying the amount of information and involvement that children have in the adult world. Parents and caregivers will work on developing their own solutions to issues surrounding the children in their lives. This is an interactive and lively event so be prepared to roll up your sleeves and find solutions for your life!

All parents who share the desire to increase community spirit are invited to gather on Tuesday, October 5, at 7:00 pm in the HS library. Since it happens that Jon McAlice will be here on campus, the Governing Team has asked him to be present, as we've heard from parents that his insights feel valuable. Wouldn't it be wonderful if a renewal of community and parent involvement in the life of the school happened this year?
